Product FAQ

After installing Compass on a XP computer, it wont run   (ID:17541466)

 NOTE: ADVANCED USERS ONLY

The most common XP issues, during installation are as follows:

Microsoft XP/2000/pro etc, has open issues with programs that base the initial set up, via a INI file. What happens is, after installing a fresh copy of Compass (or any software that writes a INI file)

Compass does not make its own desktop shortcut, if you start Compass from a shortcut on the desktop @ the FIRST RUN, it writes the INI file incorrectly. SEE BELOW.

Excerpt of incorrect INI

[bitmaps]

bitmap_path=C:\DOCUMENTANDSETTINGS\SOMEUSERNAME\COMPASS\BITMAPS

[database]

mdbpath= C:\DOCUMENTANDSETTINGS\SOMEUSERNAME\COMPASS\DATABASE

CachePath= C:\DOCUMENTANDSETTINGS\SOMEUSERNAME\COMPASS\CACHE

FixedPath= C:\DOCUMENTANDSETTINGS\SOMEUSERNAME\COMPASS\EXE

ODBC=0

[Options]

SystemDB= C:\DOCUMENTANDSETTINGS\SOMEUSERNAME\COMPASS\EXE\System.mda

At this point, there are 2 choices

Delete entire INI (search hard drive for Download.ini, find and delete), and start compass, from C:\COMPASS\EXE\DOWNLOAD.EXE (this only needs to be done once, when INI is ok, desktop shortcuts should prove ok as well)

Edit the INI (at run command type "download.ini" then hit run, edit by removing the RED text, as shown above, save at closing.

Also: If Compass is to be loaded on a drive besides C:\ in XP, we might get an error during install that the FIXED.MDB path is incorrect" Just say ok, and finish install. Correct INI as stated above. Run the DATABASE SYNC (C:\compass\DATABASE\DLd_sync.EXE, by default) to update the current FIXED.MDB.
